Tire Blowout Season is Here

There are a number of reasons why tire blowouts occur more in the spring and early summer than the rest of the year. But our neighbors to the north are responsible for at least one of those reasons. In this article, we’ll discuss why tire blowout season is upon us and what you can do about it.

Taking Out the Sports Cars and Motorcycles

We live in Florida, so there are only a couple days out of the year when we can’t take the sports car or motorcycle out of the garage and use it as our primary source of travel. Things up north are a little different. Northerners won’t take their sports cars out of the driveway for fear of how they’ll handle on icy roads. Worse still, these vehicles can be damaged by the copious amounts of salt that are dropped onto the roads to de-ice them. Motorcycles suffer the same issues.

So instead, northerners will keep these vehicles in their garages over the long winter months. Believing that, because their tire treads haven’t worn out and there are only a few thousand miles on the tires, that the tires are still good is a common reason for tire blowouts.

The rubber hardens, even when it’s not being used, so you want to check those tires before taking your sports car or motorcycle out on the road.

The Temperature is Hotter

Among the things that can expedite the death of a tire is temperature. That’s why care is taken to ensure that tires are not too close to the engine. The hotter weather will expedite the rate at which the tire rubber hardens leading to tread and sidewall failure. While it hardens the rubber, it also causes the air inside the tire to expand, increasing the positive pressure coming from within the tire itself. In fact, for every 10℉, you should add another PSI in pressure. Getting your pressure right in the middle of the recommended range should prevent excessively warm weather from causing blowouts.

Non-Commercial Hauling

Commercial truck drivers go through tires very quickly. That’s why retreads are so popular. On the other hand, non-commercial hauling goes up during the summer. Warm weather isn’t the only thing that will add pressure to your tires. Weight load will as well. If your tires are underinflated or overinflated, they will be at increased risk for a blowout. If you add thousands of pounds atop them, it only increases your risk of a blowout. It’s something to think about before you begin hauling major loads to your campsite.

Stay Safe This Summer

Stay safe this summer and keep an eye on your tires. If something goes wrong that’s outside of your control, you may be able to file a lawsuit against the tire company.
